Sister Stephanie
Benedictine Sister Stephanie Schmidt was a member of the task force that laid the groundwork for House of Healing and in 1997 she was named the first director. She continues to bring a deep sense of mission and a great love and concern for others to the program.

Why does she do it? "None of us choose our families, but some of us were fortunate enough to be born into loving, safe, nurturing homes. The mothers and their children who come to live at House of Healing weren't that fortunate. The mothers often had horrible childhoods, and it's our goal to break that cycle. Living at House of Healing is often the first time they've felt loved and affirmed. Our mission is to help women rebuild their familes, to give their children healthy homes and make their futures brighter than they would have been without us." --Sister Stephanie Schmidt, OSB

House of Healing has built a large volunteer and donor base. Fifteen people volunteer weekly assisting with tasks including receptionist, tutor, driver, household repairs, computer maintenance, playing with children, grocery shopping. The Healing Hands Volunteer Auxiliary meets monthly to plan local fundraising activities and coordinate social activities for the women and children who live with us.

Local community support-businesses, organizations, churches--is a mainstay of our agency. Major repair, renovation and maintenance projects are often undertaken as in-kind donations by local companies and organizations.

The financial support of the local Erie community makes it possible for House of Healing to continue offering healing and hope.
